Lara Rojas Lepine registered as hematopoietic stem cell donor 20 years ago. She donated her stem cells on Monday, March 18, 2024. Read her personal story here:
My name is Lara, I’m 43 years old, and I’m a dance teacher. I’m full of energy, vitality, and optimism, and this is my story as a bone marrow donor.
Twenty years ago, when I started dating my partner, Jose, we thought it would be romantic to donate blood together (we were 23 at the time), and ever since then, we’ve been regular blood donors. We went to the Community of Madrid Blood Transfusion Center, and they asked if we wanted to register as bone marrow donors. We both signed up.
In January 2024, 20 years later, I received a call telling me that I was a match for a patient. I didn’t hesitate for a second—my only thought was that I could save a life. And so, the process began: A morning of medical tests, a couple of blood tests, four days of treatment to help the cells move from the bone marrow to the bloodstream, and finally, on Monday, March 18, I made my donation at Gregorio Marañón Hospital.
My experience was extraordinary; completely painless and as simple as donating blood, just a bit more time-consuming.
It was a morning full of learning, laughter, and conversations, but above all, full of life. I want to express my deep gratitude to the nurses at Gregorio Marañón Hospital for their kind, compassionate, and caring treatment. Thank you to all the healthcare professionals—you’re incredibly important because without you, the magic wouldn’t happen.
The next day, I was already back to dancing, full of energy, and overflowing with happiness for having saved a life.
Now, let’s reflect: what do a couple of mornings out of our routine really cost us… if in return, you save a life? I hope that my children, Adrián and Bruno, have absorbed this lesson and will become future donors. If my story inspires someone to register as a donor, that would be incredible.

Mi nombre es Lara, tengo 43 años y soy profesora de Baile. Soy una persona llena de energía, vitalidad y optimismo; y esta es mi historia como Donante de Médula.
Hace 20 años cuando empecé con mi chico (Jose), nos pareció romántica la idea de donar sangre juntos (teníamos 23 años), desde entonces siempre hemos donado sangre. Fuimos al Centro de Trasfusión de la Comunidad de Madrid y allí nos comentaron si queríamos registrarnos como Donantes de Médula Ósea y los dos nos registramos.
En enero 2024 ¡¡20 años después!! Recibí una llamada diciéndome que era compatible con un paciente. No lo dudé ni un segundo, mi mente solo pensaba en que podía salvar una vida. Y empezó el proceso: una mañana de pruebas médicas, un par de analíticas, 4 días de tratamiento para que las
células salgan del hueso al torrente sanguíneo y por fin el lunes 18 de marzo hice mi donación en el Hospital Gregorio Marañón.
Mi experiencia ha sido: EXTRAORDINARIA. Totalmente indoloro y tan sencillo, como si fueras a donar sangre, pero más tiempo.
Ha sido una mañana llena de aprendizaje, de risas y conversaciones, pero sobretodo de vida. Agradecer enormemente a las enfermeras del Hospital Gregorio Marañón el trato humano, cariñoso y cercano y daros las gracias a todos los sanitarios, sois muy importantes, porque sin vosotros no se haría la magia.
Al día siguiente ya estaba bailando, llena de energía y rebosante de felicidad por haber salvado a una persona.
Y ahora reflexionemos: ¿Qué supone en nuestra rutina un par de mañanas…si a cambio vas a salvar una vida? Quisiera que mis hijos Adrián y Bruno hayan captado todo este aprendizaje y sean futuros donantes y si con mi testimonio animo a alguien a registrarse como donante sería increíble.
